What is Frozen Shoulder?Frozen Shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis is a condition which causes acute pain in one shoulder joint followed by progressive stiffness. Frozen shoulder tends to present in people in their 50s particularly sufferers of diabetes or hyperthyroidism. There is usually no specific injury with pain coming on gradually, affecting sleep and day to day activities.
Sufferers of Frozen Shoulder usually complain of worsening pain, an inability to lie on the affected shoulder and limitation of movement when reaching. Frozen Shoulder Injection Therapy in BathAt Physioimpulse we provide therapeutic injections in conjunction with Physiotherapy treatment to optimise recovery from injury and reduce pain in conditions such as frozen shoulder.
Injections are performed by our Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Matt Shepherd who has undertaken extensive Post Graduate training in order to carry out injections at our Bath injection Clinics. Matt has also undertaken training in Ultrasound Scanning to enable him to guide injections using an ultrasound machine if required. Alongside his work at Physioimpulse, Matt also carries out specialist shoulder clinics at a local orthopaedic hospital with a number of top local surgeons giving him an excellent insight into optimal shoulder treatment. |
Ostenil Plus Injections
Joint injections have traditionally used corticosteroid but taking into consideration their potential side effects Matt now chooses to use Ostenil Plus hyaluronic injections at our clinics which carry the same benefits of pain relief and improved mobility but with no known side effects.
What is Ostenil®?
Ostenil® is a treatment for the symptoms of osteoarthritis and other joint and tendon pain. It can be used in the knee, shoulder or in any of the other joints in the body that are classified as ‘synovial’. Despite supporting scientific evidence it is not commonly used within the NHS due to its cost but has been used privately and within sports medicine for many years with great effect. It has similar benefits to corticosteroid injections but with less side effects.
How does it work?
Ostenil® is a solution containing hyaluronic acid (your joint's natural lubricator). It is injected into the space in the joint that contains synovial fluid and works by restoring the normal balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid. This effect of Ostenil® means that it can decrease pain and stiffness and improve the other symptoms of osteoarthritis. It can also be used for other joint pain,Frozen shoulder and shoulder impingement to reduce pain and aid rehabilitation.
What can I expect if I decide to have treatment with Ostenil®?
If you decide to have treatment with Ostenil®, it will be injected directly into the joint or area affected by osteoarthritis. It may take a number of days to take effect but then symptoms can improve for up to 12 Months.
Once the effects of the first injection wears off, you can, if you choose, have another.
Are there any side effects?
The hyaluronic acid in Ostenil® is very pure and is manufactured using a process called fermentation. It contains no animal proteins, which means that it is very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. Ostenil® has been given to thousands of patients and has not been found to cause any serious side effects.
Do you use ultrasound scanning to guide injections?
Injections can be carried out using bony landmarks and anatomic knowledge to locate the site to be injected or Ultrasound scanning can be used if more clinically appropriate for the area you are having injected. Matt is well versed in both techniques and will use the best injection protocol for your condition.

He graduated from Huddersfield University in 2002 and worked for 2 years within local NHS Hospitals before specialising into sports and private practice. Working at a number of professional sports clubs, private clinics and hospitals has provided him with over 20 years of invaluable experience in treating a range of clients from elite athletes to the weekend golfer striving to recover from a knee operation. Corticosteroid Injections
Local steroid injections can be a rapid and effective treatment for joint pain and inflammation, although unlike Ostenil Injections the improvement is usually temporary. They can be used alongside conventional physiotherapy treatment to help resolve musculoskeletal conditions. Research shows repeated Corticosteroid injections may have a detrimental effect on joint cartilage and tendons so at Physioimpulse we prefer to use Ostenil as it has no known side effects.
Corticosteroid is a prescription medication so although we can carry out these injections in clinic you would need to obtain the medication from your GP via a private prescription.
