Shockwave TherapyShockwave therapy is a clinically proven, highly effective, innovative treatment for chronic soft tissue injuries. The treatment involves low energy soundwaves (shockwaves) being delivered by a hand held device to the painful area to stimulate a healing response. Research suggests that after only 3-6 treatments with shockwave therapy, over 80% of patients report a reduction in pain and an improvement in function.
How does it work?In chronic injuries it has been suggested that the body's repair system has "stalled". By introducing mechanical energy research suggests that Shockwave stimulates increased activity in the stagnant healing process. There is an increase in local blood flow, thus increasing cellular activity and there is also an analgesic effect on sensory nerves. Shockwave therapy can also aid in the breakdown of calcific deposits in tendons.
Nice Guidelines advise 3-6 sessions of Shockwave to adequately stimulate this healing response. |

What can I expect during my consultation? At your first visit one of our experienced Specialist Physiotherapists will discuss your condition and current symptoms. Shockwave therapy will be fully explained and consent will be taken to proceed with treatment. Shockwave treatment typically lasts for around 5 minutes. This will be accompanied by any manual treatment and rehabilitation your therapist feels is appropriate.
Guidelines recommend 3-6 sessions which are carried out on a weekly basis. Should your Physiotherapist feel shockwave is not appropriate for your condition, this will be explained and a normal Physiotherapy consultation fee will be made. Normal side effects of shockwave therapy are a temporary increase in pain and you may suffer bruising and swelling. |
When should I not have shockwave? There are a few occasions when shockwave should not be used :
