A simple guide to using your inserts and some FAQs
What if my full length orthotics dont fit in my shoe?
If you have a ¾ length inserts as shown above, they should fit in any shoe but a full length orthotic may need trimming.
Trimming your insert/orthotic
Trimming your insert/orthotic
- Firstly remove the existing insole if possible, if it’s glued in don’t worry but in most running shoes in soles can be easily removed.
- Also make sure the inserts are pushed right to the end of the shoe and even if it does feel like a bit of a squeeze getting in the heel, it’s best for it to be a tight fit
- If the insert definitely needs trimming, make sure you don’t take off too much at a time, taking off 2-3mm from the rounded toe end until it fits tightly.
How long should I take to break my inserts in?
It varies really but as a rule of thumb we usually advise that you wear your inserts for an hour initially, then increase their use by an additional hour each day until you have reached five hours. Then you can wear them full time and for sport.
How long should I use my inserts for?
The simple answer is that if you are using your inserts to assist with symptoms and they resolve then feel free to stop using them, however if symptoms recur then it may be helpful to continue using them or to make contact with us to see if you require any additional treatment such as strengthening exercises.
What if my symptoms continue?
Your symptoms should settle within a few weeks but if not we may need to either further modify your orthotics or you may need some additional treatment. However if you don’t tell us we’ll be none the wiser so please feel free to make contact.
Remember:
- Your orthotics are only as good as the footwear you wear them in and may not fit into unsupportive footwear, high heels or sandals.
- Initially you may experience slight aching in your knees, hips, thighs, lower legs, back or in the soles of the feet.
- These symptoms should settle down within a week or so.
- If these symptoms continue or worsen, remove them and contact us. As the inserts may need further adjustments.
