“Core Stability” are words that may be familiar to you. It is your central stability where power, movement and efficiency should be driven from and where forces should be absorbed thus reducing pressure on joints and muscles that are not designed to work in this way.
A lot of “core” exercises are done lying down and statically but where in life are you in this position? Yes this is where you should start to identify and activate the muscles but we then need to move them on to function thus supporting you and allowing you to connect the upper, middle and lower zones of your body so you can move freely and efficiently, whether that be running, dancing, playing the trumpet or simply loading the washing machine.
Functional core is the integration of mobility, strength and dynamic stability in all planes of movement (forwards, backwards, sideways and twisting) all of which depend on what you do.
Once the muscles are isolated and work correctly, exercises then progress to be more functional and work at the right time. They help you to move in a natural way allowing you to think and feel how you move, identify what you need to release to allow the movement and to realise that it is not all about tension and possibly holding things in and up.
Examples of poor central stability are:
This class aims to connect you to your body and your bodily support zones to your function in a dynamic way.
The exercises will initially challenge you mentally and as we progress, more physically to enable you to move freely using the small stabilising muscles at the right time and place without recruiting the larger global muscles which are often overused, overloaded and limit movement. We will work in a circuit style manner where close detail will be upon your technique following a neuromuscular warm up that can be used before any activity.
